OLD GIGS WITH COMMENTS:

WILL ROCK FOR HUNGER BENEFIT SHOW FOR COVENANT SOUP KITCHEN at
TONY'S PUB, 125 MAIN STREET, WILLIMANTIC, CT, FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 17
Fantastic Featured Artists were:
PLASTICBOX, REW BEE (who flew in from New York City for this event), THE ACOUSTIC SURFTONES and THE NASTY MAGGOTS

This gig went fantastic, a bunch of food and cash was collected. Mick McKnickNix was at the door as usual, Bill did a great job of organizing the gig and the door prizes, and the age range of the Acoustic Surftones was from 4 years to, well, 29, I think...

With the Donut Kings, this gig was recorded (video) for posterity. Bill of the infamous Plastic Box was in attendance, as well as Sinister Finister and several Donut King fans. Some random bar hoppers who had never seen either band before stopped and complimented us on how awesome we were, and for making the world more livable by playing original music. We didn’t even have to pay them to say that.

Another Mixers extravaganza. This gig was just a diversion for a party for Green and Sinister Finister. Note that since Negative Ed broke a string on the first note of the first song at the last show, everyone tried to break this record.

Slashy J. Izzbourne was outside trying to break his car before the first note of the first song (he doesn’t know but there is no trophy for that, you have to be on stage).

Two Virgins stole the show, mostly because of Mooney. Curly got a Spector 5 string.

Ill Review is is yet another supergroup made up of members of The Clams, 9th Wave and I think one member used to be in Captain Beefheart’s Magic Band…Punk rock to the max, the members of the McKnickNix that were in attendance tried slam dancing and dislocated a hip.

Another spectacular time was had by all. With:

Version Larry

Sub Zeros

Version Larry has shared the stage with us before, they write some hard tunes executed with great musicianship. They were back after two years of a drummer absence. They did their excellent cover of Sweet Leaf again, along with Chinese Rock by the Ramones, and Pablo Picasso from the Repo Man soundtrack, I can’t remember the name of the band who did this.

The Sub Zeros are rumored to be a supergroup consisting of members from 9th Wave, the Acoustic Surftones, 9th Wave, Death Toboggan, 9th Wave and The Clams. The rumors proved to be true, great cover of Dead Kennedys Police Truck along with 9th Wave and Death Toboggan classics. Mike accidentally brought his Fender No Reverb amp instead of the Twin Reverb. Not to be outdone, Ed broke a string on the first note of the first song, a Mixers record. I think he gets a trophy for this.

The Maggots opened the show at 9:00 sharp, ±3dB. That damn werewolf kept showing up, and our *groupie* (note the sarcasm, stalker is the correct word) showed up again too. I think her name is Barb, Green Flem sung a song to her. For some reason, Wrick and Seth were playing Frank Marino & Mahogany Rush hits during sound check.

Food Not Bombs

Benefit

South Congregational Church

First gig of the new year, a pre-Superbowl party, a benefit for Food Not Bombs, with:

Perfect Silence
(again, yes!!)
Mike Musikantow

A bunch of other great singer-guitarists

d_cyphernauts

A great show, great crowd too. Perfect Silence was awesome again, Mike M and the other singer-guitarists were great (sorry, didn’t write down their names), the d_cyphernauts showed up after playing another gig with about 5 minutes notice, they were a hip-hop group with excellent, intelligent lyrics.

Holiday Extravaganza with Plastic Box and The Ders.

Plastic Box rocked the house as usual. Their fans rushed the stage, some of them throwing their panties on the stage (unfortunately, none of the ones who threw their panties on the stage were women, sorry Bill…)

This was our first gig with The Ders. They are fantastic, the very definition of eclectic. I knew we were in for a treat when the guitar player (or is that the guitar playder) was warming up with a Birds Of Fire, a Mahavishnu Orchestra song (unless that was wishful hearing). They did everything from bluegrass to “Staying Alive” (for those of you who are fortunately young enough not to remember the song name and didn’t have to live through that era, it is a disco song from the “Saturday Night Fever” soundtrack by the Bee Gees; the movie starred John Travolta) to an excellent version of Pink Floyd’s “Pigs” with the guitar player doing both the keyboard and guitar lines, using his two-handed technique, and the bass player singing the solos in the middle part. The drummder was great, playing with a mangled thumb and not missing a beat.

Benefit Gig for Chum’s mom… with Plastic Box, Two Virgins, Perfect Silence, Grayson Manor (all the way from Georgia) & a guest appearance by Slashy J. Izzbourne, who will be on break from his taping of the Tonight Show and Mad TV…more details as they become available.

This show was fantastic, a good chunk of change was raised for Chum’s Mom.

A bunch of shows are missing here; the government is to blame…

Saturday January 11, 2003

Station 58, New London, CT

We started the year off right, with Plastic Box and their new bass player Ed formerly of Dead Earth. Great crowd, with Perilous Cheryl, Brian, Cassy and Lisa (and others of course) in the audience how could it not be?? Sinister Finister of the Cabbage Night Orchestra was in attendance, trying to mind-meld us into having a CNO reunion. He was voted best Hairwalker that evening (see elsewhere on the sight for details on Hairwalking). The dance crowd poked their heads in once in a while to see how music was actually made. There are some pictures floating around, probably waiting to be developed (gotta get a digital camera...)

Saturday July 13, 2002

Scarlet O'Hara's, Hartford, CT

This was a great gig, we played in the "mezzanine" above the door, the crowd was great, the sound was perfect according to the bartender: every instrument was heard loud and clear, it was just the right volume, the only thing was that the kick drum couldn't be heard, but we will be buying a 1,000-watt powered subwoofer with the money we made that night. There were over 400 people who came into the bar that night, nobody complained (!) and several people commented on how good the band was and wanted to know where we were playing next. There was no opening act, the Maggots couldn't get anyone to play that night; the lottery (see June 29 gig) was considered a scam!

Saturday June 29, 2002

Blondie's, South Windsor, CT

Unfortunately this gig was cancelled because they rented out the bar for a stag party...their loss. The Maggots played a private party that night with over 250 people showing up and each paying a $10 cover (which included a little bit of food). Another band to be determined by lottery was supposed to play with them that night - 342 slips of paper with the names of bands who want to do this gig with us written on them were put into a hat and the lucky winner was The Turds...our apologies for the gig being cancelled; this was an excellent opportunity for them. Apparently this lottery was considered a scam by many bands who didn't win; it wasn't, we didn't even know who The Turds were before this.

Friday April 26, 2002

The Out Of The Garage IV battle of the bands at Cargo's in Windsor Locks CT

with Sugarfist, Evoke, and the EchoJanes.

Unfortunately Foghat and CCR were unable to be there to open up the battle, but it was a great time, all the bands were very cool and friendly; you wouldn't think it was a battle with so much at stake.

Evoke took 4th place. They kicked our asses at the El 'n' Gee (see below, March 1. 2002), but they were a little off due to technical difficulties (damn broken guitar string and a bass rig that wouldn't cooperate).

The Maggots took 3rd place. The usual tomfoolery abounded, the Maggots requesting tips, and having a full-size garbage can to collect them in.

Sugarfist finished second. They are silly, but talented too. They played last, but that did not deter them from giving it their all.

The EchoJanes won, hands down in my humble and biased opinion. Great musicianship, excellent vocal harmonies and a great sense of humor, a rare combination.

Friday March 1, 2002

The El 'n' Gee Club

 Battle of the Bands!!!

was the Maggots vs. Evoke...
Evoke (rightly) won this battle, nice kick-ass set by the guys (they brought most of the crowd too!!). Great version of "Smells Like Teen Spirit"!! Good luck in the finals, guys; we'll see you there (even though it's a two-hour ride for us!!) Our friend Sinister Finister showed up, it was good to see another member of the almighty Cabbage Night Orchestra.

Sunday December 30, 2001

The Equator - Big, big big gig!!!

Huge gig with a bunch of bands, unfortunately we could not see all of them (I think this list is correct, sorry for any omissions or bands listed that didn't play and again our apologies for the bands we missed):
Outside Vegas
Suburban Heroes
Tizzy
Mike Ill
Seymour Glass
The Fear Nuttin' Band
Underhanded
The Skeptics
Woodsmoke Jones
Magnum Opus
Mosshead Green
- Good music by a friend of ours.
Neurotica - Cool music and great outfits; the women of this band are nearly as attractive as Green Flem when he wears his long silk gloves.
The Winter - A general description would be great progressive-type Pink Floyd-Radioheadish tunes; I was worried because we were on stage after these guys, but the audience seemed to switch gears without a problem.
Flip Ya For Real - Great high energy ska punk, nice "uniforms"!!
N. R. G. - I'm assuming to keep the ego level down, they don't include a guitarist in the band.
Tubesteak - Funniest band in the world. You couldn't dream anything this outrageous. A midget dressed as a clown rode a giant blow-up penis around the audience. The percussionist just stopped playing and fired up the
George Foreman Lean Mean Grilling Machine (TM) and cooked up some succulent hickory-smoked bacon to raffle off. They had a money wheel and pinata. The bass drum had a smoking...well, if I told you, you wouldn't believe it so go see them for yourselves. I left after I didn't win the bacon raffle - I think it was fixed!! Great musicians and cool tunes to boot. We will be doing a show with these guys soon, hopefully.

Sometime in early December

our annual Holiday Bash!!!

Unfortunately we were unable to schedule a party this year because Chic would not give up his DVD player or his Cadillac for the raffle.

The Equator Halloween gig

With a few other bands including the Electric Pimps, who were on their farewell tour (too bad, they are a great band!). Gene Simmons (OH, YEAH!) and Eric Carr were in the house (Eric was brought back to life to play drums for the EPimps that night).

Secret date at The Chumleyhouse

great private party!!!!!!

Saturday June 9, 2001

The Meetinghouse

A bunch of gigs are missing here, too, including two parties at the Powder Hollow Barn and another 2 standing room only gigs at the Equator and one with the great Slashy J. Izzbourne and his Band of Gold...

Thursday November 2, 2000

Little City Cafe Battle of the Bands

a bunch of great bands: Burn (I think, I didn't catch their name), Shuv (from Manchester New Hampshire), Buddha Funk Special (great jam band!) and one other band, I didn't catch their name either (it was late and we had to get up early Friday).

Wednesday September 27, 2000

The Equator

the usual 350 people packed the place. The Maggots opened the show with Plastic Box member Bill in attendance.

Sunday July 16, 2000

Jake's - benefit for Jeff Black's children

This gig was a great success. Plastic Box was phenomenal, and Two Virgins rocked the place down. Green Flem was up next, and as usual the crowd wanted more. The McKnickNix played in a very rare appearance and then Knucklehead poked some eyes out. All in all, $660 was raised for Jeff's family.

Saturday April 15, 2000

Georgio's

cancelled - the place was shut down...

Saturday March 25, 2000

Steve and Sully's

cancelled as usual....

Wednesday February 30, 2000

Big Gig at the Bridges!!!

cancelled; apparently the Bridges is no longer in business and hasn't been for several years...I wish someone would tell us these things!!

Saturday February 26, 2000

Jakes

This was the Great Ape 2000 Millennium Bash, brought to you by Bill of I Luv Rock Promotions. This gig featured 10 bands:

Jimm Wrann - With a bassy voice second only to Bowser, Jim did the acoustic thing, doing mostly original and covers of Born to Run and Eve of Destruction.

House of Moses - Excellent Soul / R&B with the Moses brothers and friends.

Death Toboggan - Punk Rock. Punk Rock. Memorable songs with a religious theme (Jesus Was a Redneck; God Hates Trailer Parks) and a few classic covers (Stepping Stone and Pablo Picasso by the Plugz I believe; I know it from the Repo Man soundtrack)..

Version Larry - Rush-ish bass playing, hard hitting songs but what the hell kind of name is that?

9th Wave - The classic surf combo complete with Danelectro bass, go-go dancers, tiki torches, little umbrellas and pixie stix. They sound really tight and on it since the last time I heard them.

Two Virgins - Great as usual; Beatle-esque sound with great vocal harmonies, and wah-wah bass!! (sounding suspiciously like some old Cabbage Night Orchestra recordings).

Dead Earth - The Earth is Dying - God, that is a bleak sounding song!! These guys rocked it out as usual, with the unmistakable Randy Rhoads sounding guitar.

Plastic Box - Bill (of i luv rock promotions), Jeff and Brian were kind enough to cut the set short for the Maggots because time was running short.

The Spores - They are going to be cursing us because they were heard singing the lyrics to "Transvestite Tears" as they were leaving, and we know they will be singing it at work all next week. They were also kind enough to cut a few songs from their set. We will be gigging with them soon...

The Maggots - The Maggots headlined this affair and hit the stage at 1:00. Nobody left until well after last call.

Friday February 11, 2000

The Tic Toc Lounge,

with Donut Kings and Chupacabra, Jr. - Since the Donut Kings insist on stealing "Johnny's Teeth", the Flemsters stole the Donut Kings "Potholes", and, well, couldn't quite make out the words, so it turned out as "Buttholes". The Chupa boys were amazing in the fact that they did not get shut down for the entire set! And Dave was only dropped on his head once!

December 4, 1999

Steve & Sully's, Hartford CT

with Plastic Box - CD release party gave away 2 cars, and a few CDs but couldn't even give out all 5, even though they were signed.

November 27, 1999

Waterfront, Holyoke, MA

with Donut Kings and Chupcabra, Jr. - Donut Kings CD release and Maggots early North CD release party. Chupcabra, Jr. was shut down after only 4 songs, beating the old McKnickNix record of 7 songs at the Bridge's Cafe in East Windsor, when they were playing a Battle of the Bands with Gravel Pit and The Turds.

November 19, 1999

Sportspage, East Hartford CT

Plastic Box and Chupcabra, Jr.- Crazy ex-Pajama Slave Dancers, Mick McKnickNix was in the house.

October 15, 1999

Tic Toc, Springfield MA

with Karen Kelly, and the Donut Kings -First time together with this band, they covered Johnny's Teeth.

October 1, 1999

Georgios, Enfield CT

Dead Earth and the Spores - also a good gig, had CD's and did a few signings, then had to leave because the crowd was getting rude (everyone wanted a free signing, and refused to pay the normal $25).

August 27, 1999

Georgios, Enfield CT

with Dead Earth and Plastic Box - Good gig, saw some McKnickNix fans, who yelled for "Hockey Helmet", and it was not played because the Flemsters did not know it.

July 10, 1999

House party in Ashford CT

sans Wrick, acoustic set in the dark - There are some bootleg photos floating around the 'net of this gig; email them to me if you can find them.

June 27, 1999

The Equator, Manchester CT

with Plastic Box and Dead Earth - It was HOT out; only a few people showed up, but they enjoyed a great show.

June 25, 1999

Steve & Sully's, Hartford CT

with Plastic Box - 1st time there, free pizza and beer, a lot of people sat outside because it was a nice night. One patron remarked, "They're not another crappy white boy funk band!!".

April 2, 1999

Sports Page, East Hartford CT

with Plastic Box - This was a Good Friday gig; Brian had his timely purple cloak on.

February 13th, 1999

Knights of Columbus Hall, Broad Brook, CT

along with the Donut Kings, Mad Cow Disease, Plastic Box, Rivet, and Two Virgins. The show is $8.00 for all ages and starts at 4:00 P.M.. - "This was a great gig, a bunch of great bands and a cool crowd. Hopefully I Luv Rock Promotions does this again and invites me!" [Slashy J. Izzborne] "I wish Slashy J. Izzborne was playing tonight" [Bob from the Donut Kings] "What, no beer for sale??!!" [some guy named John] "Nobody wants to hear Deep Purple anymore" [some dude, before Mad Cow Disease got on stage] "Who wants to hear some Deep Purple??!!" [Mad Cow Disease, when they were on stage]
